Patio Cushions - They Can Revamp The Look Of Your Furniture

posted by Jennifer Akre

What looks better a furniture set with bright, sparkling patio cushions, or one that looks dingy and unloved? Usually keeping our furniture's and patio cushions in the best possible shape makes our outdoor rooms look more beautiful.

This is not to mention the money you put into furniture and patio cushions in the first place. These are costly items and you want them to last forever. In order to get your wish, there are some steps you need to take.

It generally requires a little work to keep patio cushions that have been sitting in your back yard, through the weather, looking as great as they did the day they were bought. Today's options are usually treated to avoid staining and fading, thus ensuring a greater longevity.

When it comes time for a cleaning, it is best to hand wash your patio cushions. You should do this at least once a season (that means 4 times a year), if not more. If you have a heavy pollen season, a lot of smog, flying dirt or other things that are going to make things a little messier, you may need to clean your them a little more frequently. Generally, you should be able to take a look at them and know when they are getting a little dingy. If you aren't quite sure (after a while you may forget what color those cushions really were supposed to be), turn them over and take a look at the underside or any fold areas, where you may be a better look at what the natural color was. You may well be surprised when you turn them over to see just how much their color has changed due to dirt in the air around them.

When it comes to cleaning, you should read the instructions that came with your patio cushions to see if they have a recommendation of a good way to conduct the cleaning. If not, you should experiment with a light detergent. Try a test area on the underside of them to make sure it will not damage the fabric. Once you discover the detergent is working well, continue to clean the rest of them.

If you prefer ease in cleaning, you may want to look for patio cushions that have an inner foam core which can be removed easily. Then the covers for them can be tossed in the washing machine, cleaned up, and replaced.

When it comes to cleaning patio cushions, don't overdo the water. It is important to keep the inner foam core of the patio cushions dry in order to prevent them from mildewing, especially if you are going to be storing them away in the winter months. They also should not be stored and wrapped in plastic, as plastic generally prevents the circulation of air through the cushions and usually encourages mildew growth. The best way to store them is in a relatively cool and dry place.
