Quality Teak Patio Furniture - Should You Buy It?
Much has been said about quality teak patio furniture in the last couple of years and there is little doubt that teak is the ultimate material for outdoor furniture, but is it for you?
What makes teak wood one of the best types of material for patio furniture is it's high natural oil content . The wood is resistant to rot and has very little shrinkage. And it has an extremely dense grain so that swelling and warping are rare. This means that you can leave your teak furnishings outdoors for years and with minimal care, it will not deteriorate.
There are many brands and quality from inexpensive to quite pricey. You will definitely invest more to get the high end quality so if that is what you want make sure you know how to identify that quality. Then it will last for years to come.
Teak may be in its natural state, or it may be sealed with a light coat of teak oil. Without the seal it will age naturally giving the wood a silver-gray finish. Applying a teak sealer once or twice a year after cleaning will keep it looking new.
Now here is the BIG question.
Is quality teak furniture for you? Will you still be enjoying your furniture in 15 years or will you be so tired of it that you will want something else? If you buy the high end furniture it should still be in good shape in 15 years. But do you still like it? If you have cushions do they still fit your decor? Of course you can always change the cushions for a different look but can you justify buying new furniture when what you have is still good?
Your tastes may have changed in those 15 years or maybe you are living in a different home or climate. If you had bought a set of patio furniture that was less expensive, you probably would not mind replacing it because it will be showing its age.
So the answer to the BIG question is that the high end quality may not be the best choice. Only you can decide. Will what you buy today be what you will still want 15 years from now?
